Definition

Flight control system in which a computer processes the pilot's commands and sends them to the flight control surface actuators by electrical signals rather than mechanical linkage; backup modes may bypass the computer.

Note

FBW also includes 'fly-by-light', in which the same effects are accomplished through fiber-optic cables. Power-by-wire', means the actuators themselves are electric.
